solomos & kalvos museum μουσείο Σολωμού
This is based in Saint Marks Square in the centre of Zakynthos Town.
It opened in 1959 to honour two important Zakynthian poets, Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos.
The first exhibit you find on entering the museum is the historical tree under which Dionysios Solomos sat to write the poem whose words were used for the Greek National Anthem. This tree originally stood on Stranos Hill above the town in Bochali.
On the ground floor one can see the mausoleum which houses the remains of both poets, which was installed in 1968.
You can see paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as ceramic and sculptures from the same period and also handwritten notes of the poets and several other prominent Zakynthian artists, politicians, playwrights, poets and authors as well as some period clothing and also personal items belonging to them.
